How to Sleep During the Hotter Months?

There’s nothing more annoying than not being able to sleep due to the sweltering weather outside. A hot bedroom is sleep’s biggest foe, with the ideal temperature for sleep ranging from 16 to 21C.

As the temperature rises, the time we spend tossing and turning tends to go up too, but all’s not lost. On nights when the weather is unusually humid or hot and sleep is elusive, follow these practical tips to beat the heat and get some sleep.

Cool

Slide some ice cubes into a plastic bag and place the bag on your neck and wrists. This will instantly cool your body temperature. By cooling the pulse points, you can trick the brain into thinking you are feeling cool. Another option is to fill a hot water bottle or bag and use it to cool your pulse points.

Close the Windows during the Day

If you thought keeping windows open throughout the day will reduce the temperature, think again! In fact, when you keep the windows and curtains closed during the day, you will find that your room stays cooler.

Invest in a Quality Fan

Steer clear of cheap fans as they tend to be noisy, which is the last thing you want when you want to sleep comfortably. Invest in a good quality fan that can cool your room quickly without making a lot of noise.

Turn off the Lights

Light bulbs produce heat, which is not conducive to getting a restful sleep. The summer nights get dark much later, so use this to your advantage and minimise the light usage in your household. This will not only keep your room cooler, but you will also find that it’s easier to sleep when you reduce the lighting level for some time before you go to bed.

Wear Comfortable Cotton Nightwear

Soft, loose cotton pyjamas will keep you cooler by dispelling the heat much like cotton bed sheets. They improve air flow and breathability while absorbing your sweat, keeping you cool.
